Over the course of this fall semester I have been exposed to many styles of writing, many genres and concepts which were previously unknown to me. Writing styles such as rhetorical analysis and discourse were of the writing styles I was introduced to. These two, as well as my creative paper, are the pieces that I chose to focus on. I believe that these three pieces are excellent examples of my writing.

Within the rhetorical analysis I broke up my ideas into organizational groups of pathos, logos, and ethos. Because of that organization I believe my piece had effective transitions, which improved the piece’s overall flow. The pathos, logos, and ethos ideas played a part in how I organized my discourse paper. I wanted to make sure that I wrote the paper in such a way that would keep the many aspects that I was researching in a plausible order. Because it was a research paper I took the time to pay close attention to my diction, word choice. I wanted to use words that were appropriate for my audience and words that got my points across successfully without confusion of that audience. My paying close attention to diction correlates with the way I payed close attention to my diction in my poetry that I used in my creative project. For poetry words are key. Similar words still might have different connotations in certain contexts. Whether I say “He gave a perfect smile” and “He gave a perfect smirk”. Although they are similar actions the smirk may give a feeling that the he is mischievous or evil.

I believe that part of my personal writing style includes showing my personality. I believe that all three pieces show different sides of my personality. While the rhetorical analysis shows extroverted, entrepreneurial side I think that my discourse shows my moralistic, belief clinging side. The creative project is an example of the creative part of my personality.

I think that this blog will enlighten my audience, because I am presenting my topic on a platter with their name on it. I know that Christians (my audience) will have an easier time accepting and understanding certain aspects when those aspects are supported directly by biblical scriptures. I say this because as a Christian I am often stalled by difficult decisions or concepts, but when those decisions and concepts are supported by a scripture it is easier for me to make a decision about the moralistic quality of that concept. My audience will not only learn about my topic, but they will also learn it in a way that is geared towards them, which will help support their opinions of the topic after it is read.

I believe all three pieces are good examples of my opinions on my community or the world in general. My rhetorical analysis addresses questions, such as what race should be used to endorse a product, that ofter arise during the process of advertisement. This is a good example of my investment or perspective on my community because I take it from a human race point of view. The discourse shows the same as well as I describe why success plus binge drinking equals a nobody. I think this just show that I am invested or care deeply about the success of my generation and I am willing to be subject to criticism of those that oppose my opinion in order to push for success.

Writing, for me, has and will always be one of the best and most efficient ways to organize and develop ideas. I also write to get things off of my chest so to speak. I believe that this semester I realized that I do have my own writing style. I never noticed before that I tend to take the comedic route rather than a more serious tone in any form of writing. With that said I also realized that when needed I can take a very strong, serious tone.

For the creative writing project I worked with the genre of poetry. I wrote two poems and compared the two in my analysis. I also put the poetry on a power point slide show and paired it with music. Because of the tone of the poems I kept a serious tone throughout my analysis. The poems talked about the death of two of my loved ones and the difficulty of facing a life without them. That topic itself is humorous in no way so I found it impossible to use my comedic tone, though I would have preferred to. I wrote my ethnography in my preferred comedic tone, yet because of the professional nature of discourse I was forced to write that paper using a serious tone, similarly to my rhetorical analysis. Besides evolving my grasp on the proper use of tone I was also exposed to the different types of writing such as the ethnography and the discourse paper, both of which were very new concepts to me.

Before this semester I could write opinion papers, persuasive essays, literary analysis, but the idea of new ways of writing and describing situations had not even crossed my mind. The styles of which I am capable of writing in has expanded. Through this semester I was also able to get a handle on revising methods that I had not utilized previously. These methods, such as backwards outlining, are ones that I am sure to use in the future.

I also believe that the professionalism and importance of using MLA format has finally been accepted by my brain. With having to use MLA on every paper I feel as if my brain had no choice but to conform.

Good writing is writing that is understandable and flows from one sentence to the next logically. Great writing does the same but also discusses and supports its topic well, doing so with a specific audience in mind. I believe that through this semester this concept has become clearer and clearer to me. When I keep a specific audience in mind (in this semester’s case I geared most of my work towards my professor and classmates) my diction and flow seem to all collate better. While utilizing this concept and all of the other improvements in my writing I now believe that I am well on my way to great writing.

As I produced the articles for my blog I became more and more comfortable with expressing things in a way that would grab the attention of a Christian audience. As I began writing I began to think of things in ways that my parents would explain it to me. As a young child both my parents would explain things logically and from a Christian point of view. When writing my rhetorical analysis I began to think, as a Christian, what points would I need added in order to convince me to purchase the product. I did so similarly when wanting my audience to relate to my opinion in my discourse article. As I thought of what points I thought would be suitable I realized that the best support for me would be to use scriptures as a form of support. In reality The Bible is the best form of support for all Christians. It is only logical that I use excerpts from it in order to captivate and relate to my chosen audience.

With the entire blog I hoped to take the many things that I learned this year and apply them to my new audience successfully. Choosing my audience to be that of a religious affiliation seemed ideal because I wanted a challenge. I knew that supporting each of my arguments with scriptures would be one of the most challenging feats that I would do all year. Nevertheless I accepted the challenge. I hoped that as my audience reads my articles they will be able to easily understand my arguments and relate to my opinions because of my biblical support.

For my rhetorical analysis I applied biblical scriptures in order support my points on equality and the ideas of women wearing make-up. As far as equality, I wanted my ad to include all races so as not to offend one and because I believe that all races can be an example of beauty. There is a bit of controversy about Christians and make-up. I myself keep it simple, only wearing a bit of eyeliner and mascara. I want to keep things modest. I personally believe the more make-up one wears, the less self confidence they have and the less modest they become. I supported my opinion with scriptures stating that God does not judge one’s outward appearance but whats inside and women should dress and wear their make-up with great modesty.

In my discourse I researched scriptural support for whether Christians should partake in drinking alcohol. Many people try to support their alcohol related actions by saying Jesus himself drank and made wine. Whether that wine was alcoholic or not it is made very clear through out the bible that in God’s eyes drunkenness is a sin. I used biblical scriptures, my own opinion as well as factual health effects to present my argument.

I believe that because of the way I chose to support my opinions and ideas, my work will successfully appeal to a Christian audience. I believe because the entire blog is supported by scriptures a Christian audience will find it reader friendly and very insightful.
